Letters and documents

BX May 3, 1915

The Expositor was informed by W. Baxter, 57 ½ Greenwich Street, this morning, that a telegram had been delivered to his residence on Saturday, announcing the wounding of Pte. Albert Baxter, 57 ½ Greenwich Street, in the recent fighting at Ypres. Mr. Baxter, however, is still in Brantford and is employed at the Malleable Iron Works. Consequently it was believed that some mistake had been made in the address and possibly in the name of the man reported wounded. It was thought that Pte. Albert Bater, who resided at 37 Greenwich Street, and who left with the first contingent for active service, might be the man concerned, and on enquiry there, it was learned that no official notification had yet been received from Ottawa. Mrs. Bater, who lived at 37 Greenwich Street, at the time of the departure of her husband, has since left Brantford for her home in the old country, and it is not known here whether the announcement from headquarters would be sent to her former or present address.

In the meantime, the friends of Private Bater are greatly concerned over his welfare, but up till 2 o’clock they had received no more official word.
