Details: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty before Passchendaele on 26th October 1917. He displayed great courage and fine leadership. He was in charge of a L.A.R. and he used this with great effect on the enemy. He showed cool bravery in working the gun, and throughout the day made splendid use of it against the enemy assembling for a counter attack. During this enemy counter attack he used the gun with cool judgment and with good effect, and displayed the greatest bravery under intense enemy shelling. He set a fine example to his men.

Circumstances of Casualty: Killed in Action. During military operations in the Vicinity of Emerchicourt he was struck by enemy shrapnel. He was at once carried into a house and rendered first aid, but he died almost immediately.

Official word has been received that Sergeant Alex Hassard Ferris, formerly a resident of Brantford for many years, who was residing in Edmonton when he enlisted, had been killed in action. A number of relatives reside in the city.
