Details: For conspicuous gallantry as scout officer during operations around Bourlon Wood and north of Cambrai, September 27th/30th. 1918. He went forward many times alone under heavy fire, locating enemy positions and reporting the situation to battalion head-quarters. On September 30th, when all the company officers had become casualties, he voluntarily went forward with the intelligence officer to assist in collecting scattered sections and reorganized the companies under heavy fire until wounded. He has at all times shown great courage and devotion to duty.

Mrs. Ethel Gilbert, 12 Gordon Street, received word today that her husband, Lieutenant Alfred Gilbert, who left here with the 84th Battalion, had been wounded in action.

Military Cross Holder Dies at 79

A winner of the Military Cross during the First World War died today in the Brantford General Hospital.

Alfred Gilbert, 79 of 264 Nelson Street served overseas for three years, enlisting with The 84th Battalion and later with the 75th Battalion.  He was presented with the cross for valor by King George V.

Mr. Gilbert was born in England the son of the late Alfred and Martha Gilbert and had been a resident of Brantford since coming to Canada in 1910.

Prior to his retirement 10 years ago, Mr. Gilbert had been employed as a weaver with the Slingsby Manufacturing Company.

He was an Anglican.

Surviving are his wife, the former Ethel Suffolk; two sons, James Alfred and Jack Gilbert of Brantford; one daughter, Mrs. George (Dorothy) Ball of Paris, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Mr. Gilbert will be at the Thorpe Brothers’ Funeral Home from Saturday evening until Monday, for service at 2 p.m.  Interment will be in Farringdon Burial Ground with Rev. Canon C.V. Tomkins officiating.
