Cause and Place of Death: Killed in Action

BX September 28, 1918

Private Arthur Graham Weir Reported Killed in Action

Mr. and Mrs. John G. Weir received word last week that their son, Arthur Graham Weir, had been killed in action on August 27. Deceased was one of Cathcart’s most promising young men, was kind, obliging and highly respected by all who knew him, and it is very sad that he should have made the supreme sacrifice for his home and country at the early age of 22 years. Arthur went overseas in June 1916 with the 120th Battalion from Hamilton where he had been attending normal school. In England, he was transferred to the 116th Battalion and had been in France about two years. He leaves to mourn his loss, beside his parent’s, two brothers, Lieutenant David Henry Weir, who has been in England about four months and Cadet Frank Edward Weir who has already seen two years’ service in France, but at present in England; Norman at home and two sisters, Minnie and Carrie attending the Woodstock Collegiate. The whole community deeply sympathizes with the family in their sore and sad bereavement.

BX March 30, 1916

Fourteen of the students of the Hamilton Normal school have enlisted and been accepted for overseas service.  Twelve of the number have joined the 120th City of Hamilton battalion and two the 129th Wentworth battalion.  Among those who have joined the 120th battalion are two Brant County boys, George W. Moore of this city and Arthur G. Weir of Burford.  The department of education is allowing these men to take their final examination at Easter and they will report for duty on May 1.
