Clifford Styres, 70, Dies at Ohsweken

The funeral for Clifford Earl Styres, 70, who died Thursday at his residence in Ohsweken will be held Saturday in Ohsweken. 

Reverend Robert Odendahl will conduct the service at St. Peter’s Church in Ohsweken at 3.30 p.m.  Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Styres operated the Styres Funeral Home in Ohsweken since 1935 and the Styres Coach Lines for about 14 years.

He represented District 2 of the Six Nations Indian Reserve as councilor on the elected council and was a former chief councilor.

He retired recently as a general store operator and postmaster of the Ohsweken Post Office, a business he had conducted for 35 years.

He was a past president of Six Nations Agricultural Society and served on the board of directors of the Hagersville Lions Club.  He also served on the Pauline Johnson Indian Village committee the Six Nations Benevolent Society and the Brant County Children’s Aid Society.

Active in the Six Nations War Veterans’ Association, Mr. Styres served overseas with the 114th Battalion during the First World War.  He rose to the rank of major.

He was appointed a Brant County justice of the peace in 1959.

Surviving are his wife, the former Minnie Martin; four daughters, Mrs. Hiram (Winona) Johnson, Mrs. Sam (Patricia) Martin, Elsie Styres, all of Ohsweken, and Mrs. Ray (Betty) Pindle of El Monte, Cal.; two sons, Cameron Earl of Brooklyn and Dwight of Ohsweken; four brothers, Robert of Brantford, Claude of Ohsweken, Walter and Nelles of Buffalo; also 11 grandchildren.
