F. Tolley A Victim? – Local Man, Member of R.A.M.C. Expected to Go to the Dardanelles

Frank Tolley, late motorman on the Brantford Street railway and now a member (1886) R.A.M.C., Territorial Force, may have been on the Royal Edward when she was sunk by a German submarine.

He left here about two months ago to return to the old land to rejoin his old corps, the R.A.M.C. Yesterday a letter was received by J. Simpson, 193 Brant Avenue, also a member of the street railway staff, from Tolley, who at the time of writing, August 1, was with his corps at Ford House, a hospital in Devon, England, after training for two weeks at Salisbury. In part he said:

I went to Salisbury first, but I was only there two weeks when I was sent to Ford House. It is a fairly large hospital, which will hold 500 patients. I have seen quite a large number of terrible wounds. Today we were inspected, and they are sending a bunch of us to the Dardanelles. I hope to go with them. You may guess I am looking forward to go at any rate.

If he left in that section for the Dardanelles it might well be that he was on the ill-fated boat which was sunk by the German undersea boat, as the time of leaving would allow the boat to reach the Aegean Sea by Saturday last.
