BX September 27, 1918

News was received in the city this morning of the death at Camp Dix, near Trenton New Jersey, of First Lieut. Frederick Allen Ballachey, Dental Corps, U.S.A., Medical Department. The deceased, who was a son of Mr. S. Ballachey, Paisley, and a nephew of Mr. George Ballachey of this city, was very well known here, having received his education at the Collegiate Institute, and later trained with Dr. Mills, formerly of this city. For the past five months he had been attached to the United States Army, and death took place from pneumonia, possibly through the epidemic of Spanish influenza which has been reported from several camps. He is survived by his wife, nee Miss Leone Park, daughter of E.P. Park, photographer, of this city, and their little daughter, Barbara, also by two brothers, George of Buffalo and Frank of Paisley, and one sister, Mrs. Standing of Burford. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed, but the interment will take place in Greenwood cemetery in this city. He had been prominent in church life in Buffalo, and many friends throughout the city will extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved ones.

BALLACHEY – At Camp Dix, N.Y., First Lieut., Frederick A. Ballachey, Dr. U.S.A. mid. Dist., son of Samuel Ballachey, Paisley, Ont.; beloved husband of Leone Park. Military service Camp Dix; service in Buffalo at St. Paul’s Church Sunday. Interment at Brantford on arrival of 10 am train (G.T.R.), Monday, Sept. 30.

On the arrival of the Grand Trunk train from Buffalo this morning the funeral of the late Lieut. Frederick Allen Ballachey proceeded from the station to Greenwood cemetery, Rev. C.E. Jeakins conducting the burial services at the graveside. Funeral services for Lieut. Ballachey, who died at Camp Dix on Thursday, were held on Sunday afternoon at St. Paul’s Church, Buffalo of which Dr. Ballachey was a member. The Rev. Dr. C.A. Jessap officiated, assisted by Chaplain M.H. Knox of the 11th Battalion at Camp Dix. The Last Post was sounded by a bugler from Port Porter.

Honorary pallbearers headed the funeral procession from the undertaker’s parlors to the church, escorted by about 40 dentists. Soldiers from Port Porter bore the flag draped casket up the aisle of the church. Lieut. Ballachey was a victim of Spanish influenza, followed by pneumonia. He had been ill only a few days.

The honorary bearers were: Dr. Arthur Kidder, Dr. W.R. Montgomery, Dr. A.F. Isham, Dr. W.W. Cavers, Dr. J.A. Sherwood, Dr. Walter H. Ellis, Dr. M.L. Foy, Dr. M.B. Eshelmann, Dr. A.E. Nummach and Dr. D.T. Mour.

In Brantford the casket was carried by brothers and cousins of the deceased young lieutenant. They were: George Ballachey, Frank Ballachey, George M. Ballachey, William C. Good, R. Jex and Dr. Frank Britton.
