Letters From Brantford Boys Now in the Service

June 6, 1915
West Sandling Camp

Dear Gertie and Will,

I just received the letter which you wrote me a couple of months ago, when I landed here a couple of weeks ago. By a mistake it had been sent right to England, instead of to the Exhibition Grounds and it was waiting for me when I landed. We are having a pretty good time over here. This country is the prettiest place I have ever seen in my life, though everything is on a small scale. We’re quite near Dover and Folkestone, two cities and we can get on our bicycles and go in pretty nearly every evening, though we have to be in every night at 9.30. My brother Sam was wounded and got the Distinguished Conduct Medal. About three months ago he took a holiday to England for six weeks, and as soon as he got there he was killed. Hard luck isn’t it, but it means a few more for me to get if I can before they get me, because as far as I can make out a man must be very lucky to come out of this war without getting wounded. A lot of fellows I have been talking  to in the hospitals consider themselves lucky to get out of it with only a wound, but it is a chance and I only wish I was out there now. Tell anyone who cares to, to write.

Love from,
Fred
