Proceedings of Medical Board at Discharge Depot, Quebec (Service File)

Condition: This soldier was wounded May 3rd / 17 by a bullet entering right buttock and emerging just above the symphysis pubis, scars are small.  He states that after being wounded he had loss of sensation in the whole leg. Now there is slight loss of sensation in a small area just below the buttock.  He complains of pain in the calve of leg after walking 5 miles.  Heart and lungs are normal.  General condition good.  Movement at right hip joint are normal.

Two Veterans Arrived Home – More Expected to Come to the City Today or Tuesday

Two Brantford veterans returned home Saturday afternoon. The Soldiers’ Aid Commission and the G.W.V.A. had deputations to meet the 3.52 G.T.R. train from Toronto on Saturday afternoon, expecting to meet H. Blanchard of 53 Oxford Street; H. Churchward, 105 Cayuga; Sergt J. Hardy, 29 Rawdon Street, and A. Lamb, 90 Oxford Street. None of these men however arrived. The Soldiers’ Aid Commission which was represented by Ald. Dowling and Mr. George MacDonald then met the 4.36 T.H. and B. train and on this arrived Privates Blanchard and Hardy. The other two men who were expected had broken their journey at Hamilton and were to return later by radial. The seven other men H.W. Parks, 79 Palace Street; G.B. Ramsay, 6 Spring Street; J. Rumble, 59 Strathcona Avenue; A.H. Selmes, 74 Spring Street; G. Sowers, Ruth Street and A. Waterhouse Oakland, P.O., who are the balance of the party expected last week, will likely arrive sometime today. Further word has been received that five more men will reach Toronto today. They are William Abbott, 103 Sydenham Street; E.G. Hall, 284 St. Paul Avenue; J.A. Pennell, 41 Spring Street; C.E. Warner, 17 Balfour Street.

Harold Churchward

Harold Churchward Sr., of 88 Ontario Street, died Monday in the Brantford General Hospital in his 69th year.  Born at Plymouth, Eng., Mr. Churchward was a resident of Brantford for 51 years.  He was an employee of Massey-Ferguson for 47 years, retiring in 1957.  He was a member of the Quarter Century Club there.  Mr. Churchward was a veteran of the First World War serving overseas with the 125th Battalion.  He was a member of Wesley United Church.  Surviving are Mrs. Churchward, the former Florence Elliott; three sons, Leonard of Montreal, Harold (Bud) and Clare, both of Brantford, one daughter, Mrs. Willard (Norma) Kirkby of Niagara Falls, Ont.; one brother, Arthur of city; five sisters, Mrs. Walter (Elsie) Dowden of city; Mrs. John (Jessie) Couch, Mrs. Frank (May) House, Mrs. Arthur (Alice) Cottam and Mrs. George (Ida) Everett, all in England; nine grandchildren.  Mr. Churchward is resting at the Hill and Robinson Funeral Home.  Funeral arrangements later.
