Private advices received in St. Thomas from the militia department announced yesterday that Private James Kelly, formerly of Brantford, had been killed in action in the recent fighting around Ypres.
    
Private Kelly enlisted in St. Thomas with the First Battalion. He was employed as a day porter at the Queens Hotel, but had been in that city only two weeks at the time of enlistment. He was employed for nine months in manufacturing spokes in a local wagon works, and worked at the Simpson Carriage Works, Brant Avenue, for a few days in July, piling lumber. His wife had been in this country only a week when her husband enlisted.
    
The birth of a child to Mrs. Kelly a week ago makes the death of her husband even more pathetic. The dead soldier had no relatives in this country.
