John Livingstone Pocock Dies in Hospital at Age 70

John Livingstone Pocock, 18 Huron Street, business executive, churchman, former alderman, soldier and fraternal man died in the Brantford General Hospital this morning.

Born in Cardiff, South Wales, 70 years ago, Mr. Pocock came to Canada in 1913. Residing in Guelph before coming to Brantford in 1914.

When war broke out in that year he enlisted and served in the 125th Battalion as a signaling sergeant, going to France with the 1st Motor Machine Gun Brigade and serving later in the army of occupation.  He was discharged in 1919.

Returning to Canada, Mr. Pocock joined the post office staff here, and in 1923 went to the head office staff of the Holstein Friesian Association of Canada, first as accountant, and later as office manager, retiring in 1957.

Mr. Pocock was elected an alderman for Ward 5 in 1950, and served for eight years.  He was chairman of several committees, including finance and real estate.

He had represented the city on the Brant County Suburban Roads Commission, for the past four years, and on the Brant County Board of Health Unit for 3 ½ years.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church a former soloist of Grace Church, and a former choir leader at Trinity Church.

Mr. Pocock was active in Freemasonry, being a life member of Doric Lodge, and a member of the Brantford Shriners Club.  For some years he was secretary-treasurer of the Shriners Club.

Surviving are his wife, the former Jessie Cousland; one son, John Alan, of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Mrs. Douglas (Joan) MacKellar of Brampton; four grandchildren; two brothers, Fredrick, in Australia, and Leslie in England, and a sister, Beatrice, in England.

Mr. Pocock is resting at the Beckett Funeral Home where service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday.  Interment will be in Farringdon Burial Ground.
