Martin Matthew

Matthew Martin, 80, of 46 Balfour Street, died Wednesday at the Brantford General Hospital.  Born in Kent, England, he came to Canada in 1907 and had been a resident of Brantford for 56 years.  Mr. Martin was a former member of the Salvation Army Band in England and in Brantford.  He was a Canadian Branch 90 bandsman.  Mr. Martin was a veteran of the First World War, serving overseas with the 215th Battalion and the Canadian Railway Troops.  He was employed by Schultz Construction Company until his retirement in 1955.  Surviving besides his wife, the former Edith Burgess, are three sons, William M. and Ernest P. both of Brantford, and Douglas C. of London; three daughters, Mrs. Stanley (Ellen) Thompson, and Mrs. Charles (Lillian) Clark both of Brantford and Miss Ruth Martin at home; one brother, Fred of Long Island, N.Y.; two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Bessie) Phillips, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mrs. Harry (Kathleen) Farrington of Brantford; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.  Mr. Martin is at the Beckett Funeral Home for service Saturday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Soldiers’ Plot, Mount Hope Cemetery.  Rev. G.D. Johnston will officiate.
