Details: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attacks near Cambrai on 28th September and 1st October, 1918. Throughout he was continuously present on the battlefield, dressing the wounded and assisting in their evacuation amidst very heavy fire. He had no rest for two days, during which time he was indefatigable in carrying out his duties and relieving the suffering.

Local Chaplain, Samuel Ephram McKegney Decorated for His Work Around Cambrai

Word has been received that Captain Samuel McKegney, chaplain of the 215th Battalion in this city, has been awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in action. Capt. McKegney was formerly rector at Trinity Church, Eagle Place, and is well known in this city. The work for which he received the decoration was done in the stiff fighting around Cambrai last November.

Rev. S.E. McKegney Passes in Ireland – Former Rector of Trinity Church and First War Padre, Dies

Rev. S.E. McKegney, former Rector of Trinity Anglican Church here, and padre of the 215th (Brant) Battalion, First Great War, died suddenly Saturday in Belfast, Ireland, according to word received by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Edgar W. McKegney, Toronto.  Rev. Mr. McKegney, who was 56 years old, was very well known here.  As chaplain, he accompanied the 215th Battalion overseas, having the rank of honorary Captain.

Overseas he was transferred to the 58th Battalion, in which there were many Brantford officers and men.  While serving with it he won the Military Cross.

Born in St. Paul Minn., Mr. McKegney was graduated from Huron College, London.  He moved to England ten years ago where he remained two or three years before going to Ireland.

He was rector of Mountrath Life Church, Queens County, Ireland, for several years.

He is survived by a sister, Miss Irene McKegney, Belfast, and a brother, Rev. Herbert McKegney, Rector of St. Augustine’s, Londonderry, Ireland.  His other brother, Rev. Edgar W. McKegney, formerly rector of St. John’s Anglican Church, Sarnia, died in 1937.
