BX June 29, 1916

“Regret to inform you 113561, Pte. Sidney Roy Smyth of Mounted Rifles has been officially reported missing June 2” was the telegram received by Private Smyth’s father, J.C. Smyth, Mount Pleasant, from officer in charge of record office at noon today.

It was January 1915 that Smyth enlisted in Peterborough with the 8th Canadian Mounted Rifles. He has been in the trenches since March. The last word received from him was on May 29, when his father had a card stating that all was well with him.

Private Smyth formerly went to the local Collegiate Institute and worked at the Waterous Engine Works. From here, he went to Peterborough where he enlisted. He has two brothers and two sisters, Jack of the Bank of Nova Scotia here, and Lawrence at home, Leila at Peterborough and Margaret attending school here.
