Returned Men

Thirteen returned soldiers were expected back yesterday, and it is known that at least seven of these arrived. Seven came home on the 3.52 G.T.R. train and were met by a large deputation from the Soldiers’ Aid Commission and the Great War Veterans’ Association. The men who were met are as follows: C.F. Read, 72 Brunswick; R. Doyle, 44 Northumberland; T. Hellewell, 75 Wallace; E. Knibb, Holmedale; E.M. McCormack, Charing Cross; Sergt. T. Simpson, 44 Curtis and W.W. Wakeling, 14 Burford.

Walter W. Wakeling

Walter W. Wakeling of 413 Bartlett Avenue, Toronto, and formerly of Brantford, died Wednesday in Sunnybrook Military Hospital, after a long illness.  He was a butcher.  Mr. Wakeling served in the First World War with the 215th Battalion, CEF.  Surviving besides his widow Mary is a son, Walter W. Wakeling, Jr., of Toronto; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Talbot of Hamilton, one brother, Nelson Wakeling of England; one sister, Mrs. Clara Biffin, of Brantford, and five grandchildren.  A brother Robert of Brantford and a brother Alfred of Hamilton both predeceased him.  Mr. Wakeling is resting at Beckett Funeral Home until Saturday for service at 1 p.m. Interment will be in the Soldiers’ Plot in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Many relatives and friends attended the funeral of Walter William Wakeling Saturday afternoon at the Beckett Funeral Home.  Rev. R.A.E. Ruch of St. Jude’s Anglican Church officiated.  Many floral tributes were dedicated to Mr. Wakeling’s memory.  Pallbearers were all members of Branch 90 of the Canadian Legion, Fred Casey, James Turner, William Bowden, Reginald Kerr, Norman Frey and Clifford Raven, David Monkman was in charge of the legion bearers. Interment was in the Soldiers’ Plot in Mount Hope Cemetery.
