Many casualties from Western Ontario are contained in the latest official lists, which are amongst the heaviest yet issued. About 50 names from this section of the country are to be found in the lists, although only four or five of that number were killed. Pte. Roy E. Goodfellow, Simcoe; Pte. William S. Matthias, Paris, and Pte. Melvin Thomas, Burford, are all reported wounded. Pte. Matthias enlisted with the 38th D.R. of C. in August, 1915. He was 29 years of age and unmarried.

William S. Matthias

William Stephen Matthias, 75 of 7 Halls Avenue, died suddenly Monday at his residence. Born in Basingstoke, England, Mr. Matthias came to Canada 50 years ago and resided in Paris until he moved to Brantford in 1946. Mr. Matthias was employed as a Stationary Engineer with te Brantford General Hospital for the past 20 years. He was a veteran of the First World War enlisting in the 37th Battalion and was wounded three times serving with the 25th Battalion in France. He was a member of Branch 29, Royal Canadian Legion, Paris. Mr. Matthias was predeceased by his first wife Lily in 1945. Surviving besides his second wife Jenny Dickens are one daughter, Mrs. Stephen (Jessie) Howard of Brussels, Ont., two sons, William of Paris, and Charles of South Dumfries; one step-son, Cecil Dickens of Brantford; three brothers and one sister in England; 17 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mr. Matthias is at the Beckett Funeral Home for funeral service Wednesday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Paris Cemetery.
