Magistrate W.W. Patterson, Paris, is Called by Death – Had Served as Councillor and Mayor – War Record

PARIS, Oct 30 – There passed to rest on Tuesday evening, October 29 at 6 o’clock on of Paris’ native sons, and old and highly esteemed resident, William Waite Patterson, D.D.S.  He was born in Paris, November 19, 1859, the eldest son of the late William and Marie Patterson.  Dr. Patterson was educated in Paris, later graduating from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons in 1885 as a gold medalist.  After graduation he succeeded his father who was one of the first licensed dentists of the province, and since he has conducted this practice for the last 44 years.

As a young man Dr. Patterson was an active sportsman interested in polo, lacrosse and curling.  The older residents of Paris will remember his organization of the Patterson Rough Riders.  He took an active part in municipal affairs, first in the council and as mayor of Paris for several years.  For the last 20 years, succeeding W.G. Powell esq., he has been police magistrate of the town.

For many years he was an officer in the 25th Brant Dragoons and during the war, as major, recruited many men for the 125th Battalion, although he himself, on account of his age, was unable to go overseas with them.  He was a lifelong member of the Paris Presbyterian Church and a past master of St. John’s Masonic lodge, No. 82 and a member of the Brant chapter of Masons and Foresters and a member of the Sons of Scotland Lodge.  In 1899 he was united in marriage to Margaret Alberthe Baker, youngest daughter of the late John and Eliza Baker of Paris.  Besides his widow he leaves to mourn him two children, Miss Elaine Patterson, B.A., of the St. Catharines Collegiate Institute and Dr. Eric Patterson of the Sick Children’s Hospital, Toronto, and four brothers, Ex-Mayor J.M. Patterson and Frank Patterson of Paris, Dr. A.A. Patterson of Michigan and Dr. George R. Patterson of Toronto.

The funeral, under the auspices of the Masonic lodge, will take place on Friday, November 1, from his late residence Grand River Street to Paris Cemetery.
