Arrested as a Deserter – Member of Mounted Rifles Outstayed His Leave Because His Wife Was Sick

Private William Vaughan Waterman, who enlisted with the 25th Brant Dragoons here, was arrested at Ayr yesterday by County Constable Taylor, on a charge of desertion from the Canadian Mounted Rifles Regiment. He has overstayed his leave considerably without notification to the proper authorities.

The request to secure Waterman was received by the local police from Lieut.-Co. Vaux Chadwick, officer commanding the mounted regiment. The latter was notified today that Waterman was being held here for a military guard to escort him to Toronto.

Waterman’s story to the local police was that his wife was very sick and he did not care to leave her in that condition without some one to look after her.
