Billy Weller, Veteran of Two Wars, Dies

William J. (Billy) Weller, 71 Erie Avenue, one of Brantford’s best known war veterans died at the Brantford General Hospital today.

Born in Brantford, he was the son of the late W.J. Weller and Kate Oliver Weller and had resided here all his life with the exception of those years taken up with service overseas.

He was a letter carrier and sorter at the post office here for 15 years, retiring in 1943 because of failing health.  In the intervening years he became a collector of information on innumerable events, people and things that made him almost an encyclopedia.

For service in the First World War he enlisted in the 125th Battalion, serving in France, and in the Second World War he was with the Postal Corps overseas.

In years past he was keenly interested in hockey and promoted minor hockey here and throughout Ontario, being the first president of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association.  He was a member of Branch 90, Canadian Legion.

Surviving are his widow, the former Hilda Ayre; two sons, William J., city, and James of Mildmay, two daughters, Mrs. Richard (June) Schertzberg, Brantford, and Mrs. John (Hilda) Heisler of Thistletown, Ont.; one brother James of Owen Sound; two sisters, Miss Catherine A. Weller of Vancouver, and Mrs. Gerald (Mary) Vath of Toronto and 11 grandchildren.

Mr. Weller is resting at the Hill and Robinson Funeral Home until Saturday for service at 11 a.m. in the chapel.  Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
