Leg Shot Off Above Ankle

To have one of his legs shot off above the ankle by a shell in the battle of the Somme was the experience of Private Duncan Stephen Spence, who returned to the city on Thursday evening last. Although the Soldiers’ Aid Commission only received notice of his return an hour before the train was due to arrive, a small deputation was on hand to receive him. He was taken to the home of his brother at 247 Greenwich Street. His brother is also overseas. Pte. Duncan Spence will spend a few days here before going to the hospital at Whitby to be fitted with a leg. His leg was shot off just above the ankle and later on it had to be amputated half way between the knee and the ankle.
