BX August 23, 1918

Private William Stuart, infantry, officially reported admitted to No. 1 Australia General Hospital, Rouen, August 16, gunshot wound in left leg, contusion in forearm, was the message received by Pte. Stuart’s wife, 84 Marlborough Street, today. Pte. Stuart enlisted with the 36th Battalion, and was transferred to the 19th Battalion and had been in France since February, 1916. He was a painter before he joined the army.

BX August 28, 1918

William Stuart, son of Thomas Stuart, 181 Sheridan Street, has been reported wounded in the left leg and left arm. He left here with the 36th Battalion in the spring of 1915 and has seen a lot of service. He is one of five sons enlisted, of whom John is home wounded, Albert is a prisoner of war, Stanley is still in France and Chauncey was discharged because of an injured hand.

William Stuart

William Victor Stuart, 71 of 202 Rawdon Street, died this morning at the Brantford General Hospital.  Born in Woodstock, Mr. Stuart was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stuart.  He resided in Brantford for 69 years.  A painter and decorator for 45 years, he was associated with Bert Hawke and with Dickson Decorators.  Mr. Stuart was a veteran of the First World War, enlisting in the 36th Battalion and later transferred to the 19th Battalion.  He was a member of Branch 90 Royal Canadian Legion and a member of the Church of England.  Surviving besides his wife, the former Edith M. Mears are five daughters, Mrs. Albert (Marjorie) Smith, Mrs. Doris Darville, Mrs. Henry (Jean) Ward and Mrs. Dennis (Marion) Safko, all of Brantford and Mrs. Richard (May) Cooper of Toronto, two brothers, Thomas and Chester, both of Brantford, one sister, Mrs. Stanley Cramer of Detroit, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Mr. Stuart is at Beckett Funeral Home for service Friday at 2 p.m.  Interment will be in the Soldiers’ Plot, Mount Hope Cemetery.
