Details: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 15th/16th September at Pozieres. He successfully led his men in the charge on two of the enemy’s trenches, and although out of his squad of linemen, only 3 were left, he organized them in such a way that he kept up the supply of grenades to the other sections. The bombing squad detailed to clear, and hold our left flank which was in the air, being all casualties. He with 3 other men took their places, making a block out of the dead bodies of Germans, and successfully held the position gained. Subsequently he advanced down the trench putting in a block some 50 yards further to our left.
