Home on Furlough

After over a year spent in hospitals in England through sickness contracted overseas, Private Gordon Braund arrived home last evening on furlough. He is a son of Mrs. E.S. Braund, 52 Mount Pleasant Street, and E.S. Braund, who is at present in England with the ordinance corps. Pte. Braund went overseas with the 4th Battalion and had about 17 months service in France before becoming ill. He was an employee of Simpson’s Carriage works before enlisting.

How Soldier Fooled Censor – Brantford Boy Succeeded in Letting His Mother know Where He Was

One Brantford soldier now on active service in France has discovered a way of fooling the censor and letting his friends know just where he is located. He is Pte. Gordon Braund, son of Mrs. E.C. Braund of this city. In her last letter to her boy, Mrs. Braund ventured the guess that the Canadians were in the neighborhood of Amiens. The following cunningly worded reply told her exactly where they were.

Dear Mother,

Just a few lines to let you know I am all O.K. and that I am very much in need of chewing gum. Please send me some and oblige. We have been in the trenches and it is quite an experience, believe me. I had a letter from father and he is not getting your mail, so you had better see about it. You are a pretty good guesser, I must admit, but you are not so close as you might be. You know LILLE; well I had a letter from her the other day.

Well, this is all as we cannot say anything about what we are doing, so I will close.

E. Gord Braund

E. Gordon Braund, 27 Grant Street, died this morning at his residence in his 55th year. Born in Brantford, Mr. Braund had been a resident here all his life. As a boy he was active in the Boy Scouts and was the first Scout in Canada to receive the “Silver Wolf” award. He served four years overseas in the First World War with the 4th Battalion and was a member of the Canadian Legion. For many years Mr. Braund owned and operated a service station here, retiring about three years ago. Surviving besides his widow, formerly Marion Greenwood are one son, Gary at home; one brother, D. Cecil, Brantford; four sisters, Mrs. R.M. (Greta) O’Gawa, Honolulu, Mrs. Elgin E. (Jule) Smith, city, Mrs. Edward (Marion) Ewen, Saginaw, Mich., Mrs. J.A. (Jean) Grey, New Orleans. Mr. Braund will rest at the Hill and Robinson Funeral Home.
