Circumstances of Casualty: Killed in Action. During a heavy bombardment of our trenches, known as the “Oppy Sector,” this non-commissioned officer was passing from one funk-hole to another, seeing that his men were safe, when an enemy shell fell in the bay he was in, killing him instantly.

Harry Edward Briscoe Reported Killed in Action

Mr. Thompson, 132 Gage Avenue North, Hamilton, has been officially notified that his nephew, Harry Briscoe, who enlisted in the 125th Battalion, has been killed in action. He was formerly connected with the Bank of British North America at Hamilton, and is well known in this city.

Banker Enlisted Without Leave – Would Not Wait Longer After Leave to Enlist Was Refused

Amongst the recruits signed up for the 125th Battalion yesterday was Mr. Harry Edward Briscoe of New York City. Mr. Briscoe formerly lived in Brantford and was on the staff of the Bank of British North America. From the bank here he was transferred to the Hamilton branch and then to New York, where he had been for some time.

Mr. Briscoe is well known and extremely popular throughout the city. He is Irish by birth and is in his 27th year.

For the past year, it is understood, he has been trying to get leave from the bank to permit of his enlisting. He tried when Col. Ashton was in charge here, but was unsuccessful. However, the desire to do his “bit” never left him and a few days ago he made up his mind to enlist here, whether he got leave or not.
