Fortune Comes As Reward to Portage Girl - Former Nurse Inherits $10,000 For Attention to Invalid Cousin After the War

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, July 16 – Mrs. Gordon I. Snider, who resides with her husband some miles from Portage, has Just received word of a legacy of $10,000. Indirectly the result of her work as a nurse with the Canadian forces in Flanders. Mrs. Snider, formerly Miss Mabel Acret, of Brantford, Ont, returned to England after her services in France and stayed with her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Emily Louise Acret.  During her stay, Mr. Acret became ill and Miss Acret attended him as a nurse. In return for her services he promised to make provision for her when he had died. Fortune invested at his death, however, everything passed to Mrs. Acret, but it was known that the desires of the late Mr. Acret would be fulfilled. In the will of Mrs. Acret, who died a few weeks ago, and this was done. Mrs. Snider states that the Acret fortune is largely invested, some of it being in stock of the Canadian Pacific Railway and Bank of Montreal. She has not made any plans so far for spending the fortune, preferring to wait and see when she actually got the money, but in all probability the money will be invested. Mrs. Snider's mother and sister reside at Brantford, Ont. Mrs. Snider is well - known in this district, and her husband is the oldest son of Colonel. Irvine Robinson Snider who served in the Great War and also in South Africa.
