Robert Gillies had been admitted to the First Canadian General Hospital at Etaples on May 4 suffering from gunshot wounds in the chest and back. Private Gillies went overseas with the first overseas battalion of the 38th Dufferin Rifles and went across to France with the first draft as a stretcher-bearer.
