Order Further Probe in Death of Soldier – Autopsy Performed But Coroner Decides Stomach Analysis Necessary

Analysis of the stomach contents of Private Samuel Hutchison, 45, Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps, who died suddenly at his brother’s home on Briggs St. early Thursday has been asked by chief coroner Dr. Smirle Lawson.

Dr. W.L. Robinson performed the autopsy and discovered the soldier had a heart condition, “but not enough to satisfy us fully that this was the only cause of death.” Dr. Lawson said.

“It is possible the heart weakness was the only cause,” the coroner explained.

Admitted to the army only three weeks ago, Private Hutchison had passed the army medical examination with an A-1 rating, said his 18-year old son David, eldest of a family of eight.  Military authorities had no comment to make on the man’s medical rating.

“Dad had been kidding me that he made the grade when I didn’t.”  Dave recalled, “I was called up for active service after having been in the militia, but later I was discharged because I’m not 19.”

Dave said he was hoping to get work with a large typewriter firm with which his father had been employed for 15 years as a mechanic.  The eldest daughter, Doreen is married, Ronald 16, has left school, but has no work; Samuel, 14 is at present the only member of the family with a job; Norman, 13, Norma, 10 and Robert, 8 are still at school.  The youngest child is Douglas, 2 ½ years old.
